To represent you in Westminster, it’s important I hear resident’s views. I had a chance to do just that at one of my “In Conversation with your MP” events at Leconfield Hall in Petworth last Friday. Hosted by independent local journalist Gary Shipton, a large audience had the chance to ask questions and share their point of view directly. Many constituents take the time to write to me or for a specific issue come to my weekly surgery, but this am alternative of having a public interview and frank and honest discussion. I’m the run up to this year’s Parliament week I will be hosting more of these events across our local area. The next event will be in Henfield on Friday 20th October and free tickets are still available on my website – www.andrewgriffith.uk/QandA. I hope I will see you there and get to hear views directly from those who matter most: you and your neighbours.
I was pleased that the Department for Transport has announced an extra £17 million for bus services across the South East. This takes the total to more than £246 million and means better, more reliable services and lower fares. Rural transport is often a bigger challenge than in cities and I have always pushed for this to be taken seriously in Westminster. The Government’s funding can be used for weekend and evening services and flexible services as well as discounts for the elderly and young people who may struggle the most. Importantly, decisions on how to spend the money will be made by local authorities themselves. This funding is on top of the £2 bus fare cap which I know has already helped many to continue to stay mobile and use the bus services they rely on — with the average bus fare in rural areas dropping by 10.8%.
