Arundel and South Downs MP, Andrew Griffith has expressed his disappointment that Arun District Council’s Planning Committee has voted in favour to lift the pause on it Local Plan Update, possibly allowing the development of thousands of extra houses in the local area.
The Committee voted in favour of lifting the pause, put in place when the Government introduced a review into national planning policy. It was indicated to Councillors on the Committee that an approval of the proposal to lift could see the development of over 11,000 extra houses.
The proposal which may lead to thousands of extra houses was supported by all Councillors on the committee except the three Conservatives present.
Commenting, Andrew Griffith MP said:
“It is disappointing that the Green Party and Liberal Democrats appear intent on pursuing a local development plan ahead of Government reforms which are expected to lighten the burden of house building on local communities.
If any house building is to take place it at all must be on brownfield land – not the green gaps that protect communities and nature alike - and I call upon the Council to adopt this as a clear policy immediately.
It is crucial that the new administration spend all Section 106 payments to improve our community – in addition to using the millions of pounds of investment secured by the previous Conservative administration from the Government.”
