Arundel & South Downs MP Andrew Griffith hosted an Assisted Dying consultation at Pulborough Village Hall last Friday (22nd November) in the heart of the constituency. Recognising the emotive nature of the topic, Andrew sought to provide a platform for the thoughts and experiences of local residents to be heard. This consultation is a part of a series of open dialogues with constituents that Andrew has hosted since the recent general election in July.
The event saw residents from all corners of the constituency taking time to engage with the discourse relating to the issue and a keen interest in helping to inform the decisions that affect them. The event saw voices from a diverse set of backgrounds; speeches were given by doctors, hospice carers and legal professionals, each offering their personal perspectives and presented a unique side to the issue.
The event concluded with an open forum, in a microphone was passed around the Hall to those who had not yet expressed their views. Residents were able to provide some quick insights and were able to expand on points made previously by the designated speakers. Finally, Mr. Griffith made an acknowledgement expressing his gratitude for the community's active participation and thoughtful contributions. He emphasised the importance of the consultation in its part in shaping his perspective on the issue.
Mr Griffith said: “I am deeply grateful for participation and contributions by all. The meeting has been invaluable in shaping my perspective on this highly sensitive issue. I will take all the views expressed here today into careful consideration as I prepare to cast my vote in the House of Commons this Friday.”
