Arundel and South Downs MP Andrew Griffith joined Slindon Parish Council and village residents for a special tree planting ceremony to commemorate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee on Friday (11th March).
The two English oak-tree saplings (Quercus robur), from Arundel Arboretum, were planted as part of the nationwide Queens Green Canopy. Villages and towns, organisations, schools, and businesses across West Sussex are all taking part in planting trees this year to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation.
Slindon Parish Council selected 11th March for the tree planting because it was the 70th day of 2022, the year in which The Queen marks the 70th year of Her accession.
Parish Council Chairman, Jan Rees, said:
“It was wonderful to see our event so well-supported by the community, with Andrew Griffith MP, and long-standing residents Annie Foreshew and John Apps helping to plant our English Oak. Annie and John both lived in Slindon at the time of the Queen's Coronation, so we feel particularly privileged they could join us in celebrating this momentous occasion”.
Andrew Griffith said:
“This is a wonderful project to mark The Queen’s Jubilee and I am delighted that Slindon have taken part. It was an honour to support the planting of their English oak trees which will be a wonderful legacy for The Queen and future generations of Slindon residents.”
