Andrew Griffith joined the team behind the Greenpower Education Trust in Fontwell to try for himself an electric vehicle built by schoolchildren.
The Greenpower Education Trust, founded by engineer and entrepreneur Edward Way, is a UK-based charity with one mission – to get young people excited about science and engineering by building and racing electric cars.
The charity visits schools all across the country to help them cross the finish line in their very own kit car. There are 35 regional race events each year, including locally at Goodwood race-track, as well as an international final to compete in. Teams from USA, China, India and Poland are amongst the other countries competing under the Greenpower licence.
Most importantly, the charity is helping to address the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills gap. It has attracted the support of major sponsors including Siemans, Ford, and Institute of Engineering and Technology. The track days even attract the support of Le Mans racing professionals.
Michele Augousti, Chief Executive of Greenpower, and Jamie Morgan, Project Assistant, welcomed Andrew to the charity’s headquarters and let him have a go in one of their kit cars around the car park circuit.
Andrew Griffith said:
“This is incredibly exciting! I am pleased to have such a well-known charity as Greenpower locally and I am looking forward to helping them get into more schools. Greenpower are bringing STEM subjects to life through the excitement of car-racing and developing life-long skills to support the UK’s growing science and tech industries.”
